Oral cancer is cancer that develops in any part of the mouth. Unfortunately, there are over 200,000 US cases per year. Factors that can increase your risk are: tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and the human papillomavirus (HPV). Signs and symptoms to look for are: lesions that do not heal, white or red patches in the oral cavity, or lumps in the mouth. Just like any other cancer, early detection is the key to reducing a devastating effect on victims. Annual cancer screenings help to achieve early detection. With oral cancer, the death rate has remained unchanged for over 40 years. Early detection is crucial to successful treatment.
